Powerful, scandalous, brave, inspiring….women of Washington D.C.! Join Susan and Beckett of The History Chicks podcast for an action-packed weekend in our nation’s capital and discover the stories of the women that have shaped America. You will walk in the footsteps of suffragettes, admire the monuments dedicated to the brave, gawk at the treasures collected by an influential heiress, explore the beloved home of our nation’s first first family all while enjoying the spring blooms that make our capital so beautiful. The best part- creating instant friendships with like-minded travelers!

Day One- Welcome to Washington D.C.! Check into the beautiful Royal Sonesta Washington D.C. and get comfortable before meeting The History Chicks and your fellow travelers. We kick off this fabulous weekend with a cocktail party before boarding our private trolley to see the iconic D.C. monuments illuminated under the night sky.

Day Two- We begin our day by paying homage to the fabulous heiress, Marjorie Merriweather Post at her D.C. home Hillwood Estate. Our time at Hillwood begins with a curator-led tour through the mansion, Russian art collection. Plus, for our field trippers only – an exclusive look at Marjorie’s personal papers and documents, an area off-limits to the public but open for Susan and Beckett’s friends. Next up, leisure time on the grounds. Set on 25 acres, the gardens are just as impressive as the mansion. Be sure to explore the gardens and catch the current exhibition Determined Women: Collectors, Designers, and Artists at Hillwood before collecting your boxed lunch and joining your fellow travelers on the bus.

Next up, a visit to the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office. Stand in the rooms where the selfless Clara Barton lived and worked during the Civil War. Our guided tour will reveal the story of how Barton used her own resources to gather information on missing soldiers bringing comfort and closure to thousands of families. Afterwards, we relax and get to know our fellow travelers over afternoon tea at the D.C icon, The Willard Hotel, where President Grant sat in the lobby to hear people’s concerns- he eventually called them lobbyists! The evening is yours to explore D.C. on your own.

Day Three- We begin our day at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The newest Smithsonian museum opened its doors in 2016 and has quickly become a top attraction in Washington D.C. Learn the incredible story of the African American experience through thoughtful exhibits on everything from slavery to Black Lives Matter, and gain a greater appreciation of the contributions to our shared culture. See a shawl worn by Harriet Tubman, a dress sewn by Rosa Parks, Shirley Chisholm campaign paraphernalia and so much more. A sobering and inspiring experience.

Next up the National Museum of American History. This museum charts the nation’s history from colonial times to the present. With over 3,000,000 historical objects, there is so much to discover. From suffragette’s sashes to First Ladies gowns to Julia Child’s kitchen- this museum is an absolute treasure trove of objects and exhibits that tell the story of America.

This evening we meet the local area The History Chicks listeners aboard the elegant glass boat, Odyssey, for a 3-course meal. Sailing the Potomac River you will discover this iconic city from a completely different perspective while dancing with your new best friends!

Day Four- Get to know the influential women that have called D.C. home on our walking tour: The Women that Changed America. This walking tour, led by expert guides, will unveil the stories of suffragettes and New Deal pioneers alike!

After lunch we come together once more for a visit to The National Portrait Gallery. So many former The History Chicks subjects grace the walls of the iconic D.C. art museum. Gaze at Dolley Madison, Frida Kahlo, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and more- and if you missed the Obama portraits on tour last year- you can see them here.

Our action-packed capital weekend has come to an end and tonight we say good- bye in a very special way. Board our private motor coach and travel to a serene setting on the Potomac- Mount Vernon. We take over the beloved home of George and Martha Washington after the museum has closed to the public. Our private guided tour will take us all through the home, including areas not shown to the general public. Even those who have seen Mount Vernon, have never seen it like this. After soaking in the solitude of the home and grounds, we will dine as a group in the Mount Vernon Inn and toast to good times and good friends over a delicious 3-course meal.

If the walls of Washington D.C. could talk, the stories they’d share! Exploring this rich, vibrant area steeped in history and legend with The History Chicks, and like-minded travelers, will make this a trip an adventure to remember!
